Benjamin Murmelstein is the last President of the Jewish Council in the Theresienstadt ghetto in Czechoslovakia, the documentary by Claude Lanzmann talks about a series of interviews in Rome 1975 with the only "Elder of the Jews" that have not been killed during the war. A rabbi in Vienna, following the annexation of Austria by Germany in 1938, Murmelstein fought with Adolf Eichmann for seven years in this period they have been helping around 121,000 Jews to leave the country, and blocking the liquidation of the ghetto.
These interviews shot in Rome, Claude Lanzmann at the age of 87 "2012" returning to Theresienstadt, wich have been given to the Jews by Hitler. We discover the extraordinary personality of Benjamin Murmelstein, a so-called model ghetto, but a ghetto of deceit chosen by Adolf Eichmann to dupe the world, intelligence man blessed with true courage, along with an great memory, which makes him a great storyteller.
from Nisko in Poland to Theresienstadt, and from Vienna to Rome, the film give us insight into the life of the Final Solution, Eichmann, and exposes the savage conflicts of the Jewish Councils.
